Cactus painting progress step 8

  • Jul. 15th, 2008 at 10:11 AM

And... here's the yucky stage of my cactus painting where I just do a quick watery under-painting. In acrylics. On this particular painting, I'm going to paint it from corner to corner to minimize dragging my wrist through freshly painted surfaces. I'll post my progress. Comments welcome! It is also welcome to hear from you urging me on since I'm a master procrastinator :)

*************
Phrase o' the day:

"a sinking feeling"

I can think of a lot of ways to paint that phrase. If you like clever illustrations, as in magazine articles and graphic novel illustrations, your mind is already forming images. Two of my favorite book and magazine illustrators are Elwood Smith. and Debbie Tilley.  I'll see if I can find links to their websites and post them here:

HEY, where do I come off telling YOU to get BUSY and do some illustrating! Huh, pretty cheeky. (git it, another phrase to illustrate, cheeky) .

Okay, now here's my progress on the cactus bloom. It looks a mess right now, but hopefully it will take shape soon.

Cactus painting progress....

Hope you all had a happy Fourth!

I'm happy to have started my new LiveJournal blog. Many thanks to the artists at EBSQart.com for their inspiration and help to get it up and going.

Here are a few pics of  the cactus bloom I am painting to put in my new shabby frame (see post below). These are the beginning sketches on tracing paper and I'll be posting more, and explaining my method more, after I recover from two days of non-stop feasting for the Fourth of July.  As you can see, in my first attempt the petals are too short and wide and looked too heavy to be a good flower. Attempt number 2 turned out much better. I still have more tweaking to do before I do a final drawing; and then I'll transfer it to black canvas. I took many reference photos of my prickly pear cactus. I'll post more soon.... the Olde Art Teacher in me wants to explain how I do everything, and I will in future posts. So stay tuned... there'll be more :)

#1, petals too wide, too short, too heavy

Attempt #2, ahh, now that's better, a little more air in those petals, lighter...

More to come.

THANKS for stopping by :) How was your Fourth? Did you get any drawing done?
